Redwood Materials, the battery and e-waste recycling startup founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, announced Tuesday that it has closed a $1 billion funding round to expand operations in the U.S. The company takes spent electric vehicle batteries, breaks them down, and uses the metals from them —including nickel, copper, cobalt, and lithium — to produce new components that can go into electric vehicle batteries. One of Redwood's major goals is to produce battery components domestically to reduce some of the global trade and geopolitical risks around the electric vehicle industry. As CNBC previously reported, earlier this year Redwood locked in a $2 billion loan commitment from the Department of Energy. For its new growth funding round, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Capricorn's Technology Impact Fund, and other un-named funds advised by T. Rowe Price Associates led the deal, according to a company statement.

Companies U.S. Department of Energy FollowNEW YORK, Jan 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday will announce over $100 million in funding to expand U.S. biofuels production, as the Biden administration works to cut greenhouse gas emissions from transportation and meet climate goals, the department told Reuters. The department plans to award $118 million to 17 projects designed to accelerate the production of biofuels, which can be made from biomass including agricultural waste, soybean oil and animal fats. The DOE's funding includes awards to universities and private companies ranging from $500,000 to $80 million for various pre-pilot, pilot and demonstration projects, the department said. About 16.8 billion gallons of biofuels were consumed in the United States in 2021, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The Biden administration has said biofuels will be needed to lower emissions, including in the aircraft industry with lower-carbon sustainable aviation fuel.

His leadership in DC and Chicago was marked by being among the first transportation departments to embrace emerging transportation trends like car-sharing, bikeshare and bike lanes. Gabe Klein, shown in 2015 in Washington, DC, will lead the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. Electric vehicles have much smaller carbon footprints than gas-powered vehicles over the typical lifetime of a vehicle. The federal government passed new tax credits for electric vehicles last month.
